Rohan Bopanna is already the oldest man to win the main championship, the oldest ATP Masters 1000 title and the oldest first-time champion, and is now the second largest tourist-level men’s doubles finalist in the Open era. Only John McEnroe won the doubles final in later matches after the Indian match this week at the Kinoshita Group Japan Open Tennis Championships.

Bopanna teamed up with Japan’s Takeru Yuzuki to reach his 64th Tour final on Monday with a dramatic victory. The two saved three games, giving top-seeded Christian Harrison and Evan King 4-6, 6-3, 18-16 a final showdown with second seeds Edouard Roger-Vasselin and Hugo Nys.

Bopanna has entered his first Tour Championship at the age of 45 since winning the Miami ATP Masters 1000 with Matthew Ebden last March.

McEnroe was only 47 when he won the 2006 San Jose championship with Jonas Bjorkman. The Americans returned from retirement to two doubles tournaments of that season and won San Jose in February and also entered Stockholm with Bjorkman in October in the quarterfinals in Stockholm. His San Jose championship ended for 12 years. In his final match before his initial retirement, McEnroe lost to Bjockman in the semifinals in Rotterdam in February 1994.

Bopanna won the finals he played, the Australian Open at 43 and Miami titles last year. His Australian Open champion rose to No. 1 in the PIF ATP doubles ranking for the first time.

McEnroe won the world number one for the first time at the age of 20. Bopanna seeks his 27th championship and 538th victory in the Tokyo final.
