Jakub Mensik, Joao Fonseca and Learner Tien grabbed headlines among the 2025 #NextGenATP stars, winning major titles, racking up top-10 wins and climbing to career-highs in the PIF ATP Rankings.

Back in December 2024, all three participated in the Next Generation ATP Finals held by PIF in Jeddah, with Fonseca defeating Tien to win the championship. A few weeks later, the trio proved to the Tour that they were ready to compete at the top level in Australia.

Tian reached the fourth round at the Australian Open, becoming the youngest player to reach that stage since Rafael Nadal in 2005. Fonseca and Mencic both finished in the top ten, with the former beating Andrei Rublev and the latter beating Kasper Ruud.

Entering February, Fonseca’s potential exploded for a big moment in Buenos Aires. The then 18-year-old Brazilian won his first ATP Tour title in the 250 event, becoming the youngest South American champion in the ATP Tour era (since 1990).

“It’s been an incredible week, even in Argentina there are some Brazilians cheering for me,” said an emotional Fonseca after his final victory over Francisco Cerundolo. “It’s great. Every Brazilian, everyone from their country wants the support of their country. For me, it’s [moment] It’s unbelievable that I’m still alive. “

In March, the #NextGenATP train continues to roll. After Fonseca’s second win at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Indian Wells, Mencic made history in Miami by defeating Novak Djokovic to win the trophy.

The then 19-year-old Czech also beat Jack Draper, Arthur Fils and Taylor Fritz to capture the title, becoming the second youngest winner in the event’s history behind Carlos Alcaraz and the first Czech player to win the Masters 1000 trophy since Tomas Berdych in 2005 in Paris.

“It feels unbelievable,” Mencic said in an on-court interview after becoming the ninth youngest Masters 1000 winner in history. “This is probably the biggest day of my life, I did a great job and I’m really happy [about]showing off performances and keeping the nerves off the field before the game. I feel very happy and I think this feeling will come later. “

Mencic won his first tour-level title in Miami by reaching the quarterfinals of the Masters 1000 event in Madrid in April and a fourth-round match in Rome. Fonseca advanced to the third round of the French Open, further proving his credentials on clay. On the grass courts of Europe’s summer, Tian reached his second tour-level quarterfinal of the season in Mallorca, while Mencic and Fonseca both reached the third round at Wimbledon.

Tian Yong won in straight sets in the North American Swing before losing to good friend Alex Michelsen in the fourth round of the Toronto Masters 1000 event. Fonseca also impressed on the hard courts, advancing to the third round in Cincinnati with a top-20 win over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

While Mencic and Fonseca tasted success early in the season, Tian’s greatest moments came in the final two months of the year. The left-hander reached the final of the ATP 500 event in Beijing with an impressive performance, beating Serendolo, Flavio Coboli, Lorenzo Musetti and Daniil Medvedev. The 20-year-old American then advanced to the fourth round at the Masters 1000 in Shanghai before eventually winning his first ATP Tour title in Metz in November. With his victory in France, Tenn became the first American teenager to win an ATP Tour title since 19-year-old Andy Roddick in 2002.

“I never take it for granted, just coming out here and competing. So, holding this trophy means the world to me. I’m really grateful,” Tian said during the trophy ceremony. “I want to thank my team, thank the people here, thank the people back home for their support and thank them for everything they’ve done all year long, it means the world to me.”

Fonseca also enjoyed another big moment during Tian’s success. The 19-year-old won the ATP 500 event in Basel in October, becoming the first Brazilian to win an ATP title above 250 since Gustavo Kuerten in 2001. He is also the third youngest player to win the ATP 500 title since the series began. In a strong year, Mensik rose to a career-high No. 16, Fonseca ranked 24th and Tian ranked 28th.
