Sebastian Baez defeated world No. 6 Taylor Fritz 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 in a Fed Cup match on Saturday for his second top-10 win and a 1-0 lead for Argentina in their Group A match against the United States in Perth.
The 25-year-old defeated Spain’s Jaume Munnar in Friday’s opener of the mixed team event and produced one of the best performances of his career against Fritz, who showed signs of rust throughout the two-hour and 35-minute contest.
“I’m happy now,” Baez said. “We have been looking for this feeling for many years and I am happy to give this to Argentina. Thank you to the audience. I felt very comfortable today.”
Baez had lost all five of his previous matches against Fritz at the Lexus ATP, but he recovered from a set and a break to put Argentina ahead 1-0. The No. 45 player in the PIF ATP Live Rankings crucially saved a break point at 5-4 on serve in the third set and sealed the victory with a simple open volley. Argentina defeated Spain 3-0 in the first game of Group A and successfully advanced to the quarter-finals.
The United States are the defending Fed Cup champions and need Coco Gauff to beat Solana Serra in their second game. Fritz won four of his five singles matches last season to help his country lift the trophy.
