World No. 45 Sebastian Baez defeated Jaume Munar to give Argentina a 1-0 lead over Spain in the first match of the 2026 ATP Tour season on the first day of the Fed Cup in Perth on Friday.
The 24-year-old made his mixed team debut, beating the Spaniards 6-4, 6-4 in Group A in one hour and 43 minutes. With this win, he improves to 2-0 in the Lexus ATP Head2Head Series.
“I’m really enjoying this moment, enjoying my time on the pitch, I’m happy [have] Argentina won the point,” he said.
After both sides exchanged breaks early in the first set, Baez took control of the situation at 4-4 through Munar’s break and serve in the following game. In the second set, the Argentine once again showed calmness, breaking serve immediately after losing serve and leading 4-3. According to Infosys ATP statistics, he saved four of the six break points he faced in the match.
“I’m happy because I’m coming back from some pain and injuries from the last two years. So, of course, I want more. I know I have more. I have some confidence and I believe in my team and my country,” Baez shared.
With the win, the Argentinian earned his first top-50 win since defeating the then world number one. 46 Mariano Navone won the title in Rio de Janeiro last February.
