Sevastova in Montreal

Anastasija Sevastova flipped the script and bounced twice from a draw in Montreal on Friday, defending champion Jessica Pegula, the new mother, who won her first first 10 wins since 2020, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.

The victory was Sevastova’s first victory since he defeated then-third-ranked Sloane Stephens in the quarterfinals of the 2018 U.S. Open.

Her left knee has been torn since 2021 due to maternity leave and the early stages of a comeback, which is the first time that 386 Latvians have appeared in Montreal since 2021.

Now, the 35-year-old has won Pegula’s second professional victory, winning 12 of the last 15 games, booking his place in 16 rounds with Naomi Osaka.

Earlier on Friday, Osaka crossed Jelena Ostapenko with a score of 6-2, 6-4.

“The first set was tough,” said former World 11. “I don’t think I played that well. I beat the game 2-0 in the second set and I started getting better and better. In the third set, I did a great job.

“Mentally just found my game in the second set, just trying to be in court for as long as possible and fight for every point.”

Pegula, ranked fourth, has now lost three of four since Wimbledon started. She fell to 36-14 this year.
