Smarter launches £1million fund to drive digital adoption in Northwest manufacturing

The government-backed program that supports manufacturers with digital technologies is smarter and has launched a new £1million funding round aimed at accelerating the digital transformation of the Northwest manufacturing industry.
Now in its seventh year, the initiative offers match-funded grants of up to £20,000 to help small and medium-sized manufacturers adopt cutting-edge technologies such as robotics, automation, artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IOT) (IOT) and additive manufacturing.
In addition to financial support, eligible businesses have access to fully funded technical consulting, strategic digital roadmaps, leadership and skills training, and student arrangement opportunities – tools designed to help companies improve productivity, resilience, growth and sustainability.
One business that has already made a profit from it is Lyne-based Ashton-Lyne Foam 4 Sports, a client equipment manufacturer targeting the NHS, schools and martial arts clubs. Supported by Made Smarter, the company invested in digital CNC machines to automate its manual cutting process – doubles productivity, reduces waste and provides new skills to employees.
“Digital transformation is crucial for the next phase of our business growth,” said Ben Michael, general manager of Foams 4 Sports. “We need to use technology as a solution to the challenges. It’s a huge leap. Making smarter people incredible – let’s build a clear roadmap, evaluate technology choices, and prepare our team for change. The future is exciting for Foams 4 Sports.”
Since its inception in 2018, Mader Smarter has supported 334 technical projects in the region. These investments are expected to increase the total value added (GVA) in the Northwest by £242 million, creating 1,300 new jobs and creating 1,300 new jobs for 2,500 existing roles.
Planning Manager Alain Dilworth (As shown in the picture)said: “I'm glad DBT has allocated another £23,000 in annual funds to make smarter adoption in the Northwest. Most will aim to support our powerful companies to adopt new digital tools to accelerate their digital transformation.
“The opportunity to support more manufacturing and engineering SMEs is something we love and we urge companies that have not yet been in touch with us.”
“We are now entering our seventh year, providing Northwest manufacturers with the knowledge and confidence to embrace the next industrial revolution,” she said. “Through the support and funding of experts, we enable businesses to unleash productivity, accelerate growth, decarbonize operations and create high-value, future jobs.
“The industrial landscape is rapidly evolving and digital transformation is no longer optional. We encourage any manufacturer that has not yet begun traveling to take the first step.”
Applications for the new funding round are now open to qualified SME manufacturers in the Northwest.
