Massive shooting of Manhattan skyscrapers killed five people, including gunman

A gunman equipped with an attack rifle killed four people inside a Manhattan skyscraper, which has NFL headquarters and offices of several major financial companies, then shot himself to death, New York City officials said Monday.

One of the four victims killed in gun violence is a 36-year-old New York Police Department official who immigrated to the United States from Bangladesh. Mayor Eric Adams described the officer, a “real blue” hero who had worked in the army for about 3 1/2 years.

Authorities provided details of three other victims killed by almost no suspects—two men and one woman. The mayor said the third man was seriously injured by gunfire and was “fighting for his life” at a nearby hospital.

New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the gunman was identified as 27-year-old Las Vegas resident Shane Tamura with a history of mental illness and drove off to New York in recent days.

Tisch told reporters at a late-night press conference that the gunman is believed to have acted alone and investigators have not determined the possible motive for the shooting.

“Pure evil came to the center of our city and attacked innocent people and one of the police officers we are protecting these people,” Patrick Hendry, president of the Police Mercy Association, said in a press conference.

The policeman killed is a 2-year-old father

The murdered policeman Didarul Islam is a father of two whose wife is pregnant with a third child, then part of the New York Police Department program that allows its unified patrol personnel to be assigned to security details of commercial premises.

The rush hour shooting frenzy of night began in the lobby of Park Avenue building in Manhattan and then moved to the top office of a management company where the suspect took the elevator to the 33rd floor. Tisch told reporters that the bloodshed ended when the gunman shot himself in the chest deadly.

Police shared a photo of the suspect who said it was a photograph of a gunman walking into a building carrying a rifle was published by many major news outlets. The report added that preliminary examination of the suspect’s background did not show an important criminal history.

The skyscraper at 345 Park Avenue has offices of many financial institutions, including Blackstone and KPMG, as well as the headquarters of the National Football League.

According to Reuters, large police officers in the area around the tower converge in the area around the tower.

“I just saw a lot of commotion, police, people screaming,” said Russ McGee, a 31-year-old sports shooter.

Kyle Marshall, 38, was working in the Morgan Stanley office in the nearby park building when his mother texted him, reminding him of the active shooter incident, asking him if he was OK. He said, “And she sent me a text address and I was like, ‘Oh, my God. That’s next door to my building.”

He told Reuters that police had locked Marshall and other properties inside the lockdown until 8 p.m. Marshall lives in the San Francisco area but comes to New York about once a month.

“This doesn’t disturb me in Manhattan,” he said. “The police responded quickly.”

The FBI said agents from its New York Field Office are also responding to provide support on site.
