South Korean prosecutor filed further serious charges against Yoon
Yonhap News Agency reported that South Korea’s ousted President Yoon Suk Yeol was accused of abuse of authority by a team of special lawyers.
The indictment is the third in the previous indictment in January and March, in connection with his declaration of martial law in early December.
The agency reported that Yoon was accused of violating the rights of cabinet members, drafting retroactively a martial law declaration, ordering the removal of records from encrypted phone calls and other crimes.
Yoon is charged with treason and may be sentenced to life in prison if convicted.
Last week, a Seoul court renewed its guardianship order and prosecutors said he could destroy evidence if released. He will have to continue to go to jail until the sentence is passed.
The former president denied all charges. He announced martial law on December 3, which put South Korea in its worst political crisis in decades, surprised the country.
The move, he said, was justified, saying the left-wing opposition had been infiltrated by the Communist Party of the hostile state without providing evidence of these allegations.
Left-wing politician Lee Jae Myung is currently president after winning the SNAP election in early June after being fired in April.
