Australian Open organizers announced on Friday that they have awarded Stan Wawrinka a wild card into the main draw of the season’s first Grand Slam.
The Swiss star has made a strong start to the year, helping his country reach the semi-finals of the Confederations Cup. His country will face Belgium on Saturday for a place in the mixed team finals.
According to the Infosys ATP Win-Loss Index, Wawrinka has a 43-18 record at the Australian Open. In 2014, he won his first Grand Slam title at Melbourne Park, defeating Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal.
This will be Wawrinka’s 20th time participating in the Australian Open singles match. Last year, he defeated his opponent Lorenzo Sonego in four sets in the first round.
The 156th-ranked player in the PIF ATP Rankings has only missed one tournament since 2006 and has reached the quarterfinals at least five times. The 40-year-old recently announced that 2026 will be his last year on the ATP Tour.
