Steelers pick Derrick Harmon pays tribute to mom after death

Harmon's mother, Tiffany Sainehe passed away shortly after being signed at the 2025 NFL Draft on Thursday, April 24. Pittsburgh PostHarmon had to visit Sain at the hospital that night and revealed that he was the 21st pick in the draft. Saine died a moment later.

According to Harmon, his mom suffered a stroke while studying at Michigan State University in 2021. The situation paralyzed her on her left, initially worried that Harmon would transfer to the University of Oregon in 2024.

β€œMy mom and I sat down and we had a discussion,” he recalled in his profile aired Thursday. β€œShe told me that every decision I made so far was for her and it was time to make a decision for myself.”

When Harmon received a call from the Steelers, he pointed out that Sain would be excited for him.

“She is now receiving support from her life in the hospital, so it's a bit bittersweet because she works as hard as I do,” Harmon told reporters on Thursday. “It's a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I'm so excited. After getting off the phone with you, I'm going to go straight to the hospital and tell her that her son has been drafted.”

According to Harmon, his mom has long been his biggest motivation.
