Alex de Minaur did not back down after suffering a painful three-set loss to Lorenzo Musetti in the Nitto ATP Finals on Tuesday night. The Australian led 5-4 in the third set but ultimately lost 5-7, 6-3, 5-7, with Jimmy Connors currently leading 0-2.
“If I really want to take the next serious step in my career, these games, I can’t lose them. I just can’t,” De Minaur said in his post-match press conference. “I mean, it feels like I’ve lost a lot of people this year. More than anything, it’s gotten to the point where it’s killing me mentally.”
The 26-year-old is 0-5 in two appearances at the prestigious year-end event, losing in the third set to Alexander Bublik in the quarterfinals in Paris last month and to PIF ATP No. 2 Jannik Sinner in the decider in Beijing. While De Minaur won a career-best 55 tour-level matches in 2025, he lost in deciding sets eight times, including against Musetti in the Monte Carlo semifinals, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index.
“I just [need to] Win these games. If I don’t fix this, I’m going to be eaten alive,” De Minaur said. “I need to fix it as soon as possible. I don’t know how many more times I can take a loss like this. ”
De Minaur, a winner earlier this year in Washington, will face Taylor Fritz in Thursday’s third and final round-robin game. The seventh seed can still advance to the semifinals.
