Thanasi Kokkinakis announced her withdrawal from the Australian Open singles tournament on Thursday.
“Unfortunately, after speaking with my team and doctors, I have decided to withdraw from the @AustralianOpen singles competition,” Kokkinakis wrote on Instagram Stories. “After an extremely difficult year, this is the tournament I’m most looking forward to, but I’m not ready yet. I’m doing my best every day to get back to 100 percent.”
Kokkinakis played his first singles match in almost a year at the Adelaide International last week, defeating Sebastian Korda in the final tiebreaker.
But throughout the game, the Australian struggled with his right shoulder after undergoing pectoral muscle surgery last February. He left Adelaide on Wednesday.
The 29-year-old hopes to compete in a doubles match at Melbourne Park. In 2022, he won the title with Nick Kyrgios.
“We’re still going to try to play doubles and have some fun,” Kokkinakis wrote. “Thank you to everyone who supported me.”
