Novak Djokovic spent a dangerous and uncomfortable night at the Rolex Shanghai Masters on Sunday night, fighting the disease and inspiring the opposition to surpass the German qualifiers Yannick Hanfmann 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.

Most of the clashes in the record four-time champions against Hanfman were beaten, but he dug deep late and drew the energy of the crowd to keep his championship pursuits. Djokovic held a fourth round meeting with his two-hour 45-minute victory – his second best match in 2025.

“On the court, every player is the same, but it’s cruel,” Djokovic said of the Shanghai conditions. “It’s cruel when you have more than 80% humidity day after day, especially for those who play in the sun and sun during the day.

“For me, it’s more challenging to handle it. But I had to really get through the storm today. Yannick had an incredible race from the start.”

Djokovic faced other challenges in the second set after the breed and thriving victims of the Germans’ four consecutive ACEs Hanfmann became victims in the first set. The 38-year-old appears to have vomited during the conversion and began to shorten the elements to regain control.

Hanfman, the 150th player in the PIF ATP ranking, aims to be the lowest-ranked player to beat Djokovic in the ATP level 1000. Despite his aggressive shots, which led to 33 winners, including 13 A’s, he couldn’t stop Djokovic once the rhythm was found.

Djokovic’s Clook took the Camper ignited the Shanghai crowd and marked a decisive turning point. The fourth seed got an early break in the Decider and won, improving 2-0 in the Lexus ATP Head2head series against Hanfman.

“It’s incredible to play here in front of a very enthusiastic crowd. The first couple played, filled the stadium, and it’s one of the best and largest in our sport field,” Djokovic said. “So it’s amazing and honestly, I can’t ask for more. I’ve polished it in nearly three hours, and the master of the third round was 38, and the whole stadium cheered my name when I was 38. It’s a dream come true for me, so I’m very grateful.”

The turning point in the first session is good luck. Facing the third breakthrough point in the third game, Djokovic could only watch Hanfman’s unfortunate forehand floated over his head, with only a slight smile. However, once he passed a second set of competition, Djokovic asserted his dominance, reaching 16 rounds in Shanghai for the 11th time.

He will enter Tuesday’s clash with Munar with a 1-0 Lexus ATP Head2head lead, who earlier accelerated Yoshihito Nishioka at 6-4, 5-7, 6-1 to reach this stage of the first Hard-Court ATP Masters 1000 event.
