This DIY lightsaber proves that spinning is indeed a “good trick”

The new version of the most perfect replica of Lightsaber is even closer to what we want to see from Star Wars’ most iconic weapon. This new interpretation of YouTuber’s DIY laser sword achieves a beautiful effect, most reminiscent of the original trilogy of the film. That’s because the device rotates internally through a series of motors. Not only does this saber look important, but it also brings it closer to how legendary and original filmmakers envision it.

The latest video from YouTuber Jacob Uy shows the entire build process of the second edition of Lightsaber, which he originally created with several friends from college. As before, the device uses a magician’s crutch and LED strips attached to the motor to simulate the extension and retraction of automation (and a typical plasma-like shine) that you’ll see in the movie. There are several problems with the original design. First, the tool holder is too big to accommodate the motor and rolled LED strips. Also, DIY Lightsaber releases are much slower than in the movie. The single lighting array creates a dead zone in the center of the blade, which is more like a black hat than other laser swords that most fans are used to.

Uy had previously introduced Gizmodo to his plans for his homemade lightsaber sequel and judged through the video – the new rendition became good for those behind-the-scenes designs. The second edition DIY device contains an additional LED strip, combined with a special motor inside the weapon’s outer knife, rotating the new internal shank, creating a ray of both dangerous and beautiful light. Custom bearings on the inner and outer shells prevent the entire device from flying.

Visual effects of industrial lighting and magic artists create lightsaber effects by using hilts attached to rods covered by reflective tape. The VFX team then rotated the gloss to each individual frame and added a classic spinning sound effect in post-production. The rods are also attached to a high-speed spinning motor, which helps create a pulsating glow in the final film, which is now so iconic to the team. Uyi says that the spin actually creates a gyroscope effect at hand – fans of Deep Star Wars may find it particularly interesting. Of course, blades made of plasma appear to lose weight on the surface, but Star Wars’ extended universe describes how the continuous movement of blades makes them feel more physical than they appear. The novel describes how this sense of mass requires a small amount of physical strength or connection to the force that swings its strength.

The blade does quite a bit of extra engineering work compared to the first version of YouTuber. The device now includes a clutch that holds the Magician’s crutch in place. This means that the device extends much faster than before and still maintains its ability to retract. There is a separate motor that controls the tension of the LED strip and takes over the clutch. All of this combines, with the look and action closer to what ordinary Star Wars fans expect. To start, it’s easier to get than the blades that Disney-made Expanded Blade Giant showed off in the now-sans Galaxy Starcruiser experience four years ago.

Uyi said the next version of the lightsaber will include a full metal shank, and in addition, he plans to solve the problem of creating friction and slowing down the reduction mechanism. Ultimately, you may not need much mechanical expertise to create your own perfectly extended DIY lightsaber.
