Chinese university expels female students after relationship with foreigners

A Chinese university announced that a female student had been accused of “injuring national dignity” for “damaging national dignity” because she was accused of “inappropriate interaction” with a foreign man and on Chinese social media about whether the university has gone too far.

Over the past few days, the eviction has made thousands of comments on platforms such as the Chinese version of Tiktok (Tiktok), many of whom question whether the school has the right to judge her personal life and elevate it to a national import issue.

In an announcement released last week, Dalian Polytechnic University in the northeast of the country announced that the student would “excite” the student within 60 days, saying she violated university rule and opposed “inappropriate interactions with foreigners and undermined national dignity.”

“Your misconduct has had a terrible negative impact,” the news said. The university released her name, but the AP did not post it for privacy concerns.

This incident involved multiple issues in China

The university’s behavior illustrates many issues permeating modern Chinese society, including discussions around gender bias and discussions that promote nationalism in an all-round way.

Chinese Internet users associate students at the defendant university with videos posted by Danylo Teslenko (also known as Zeus), a professional Ukrainian gamer who shows he is close to a young Asian woman in a hotel room. The AP cannot independently verify whether the woman in the video is a student.

Some people on social media say the school’s decision to expel students from the “Taliban style” sign, with a specific country or group claiming ownership of the female body. Others call it misogyny, asking whether a Chinese man has sex with a foreign woman will be considered “national pride.”

The newspaper, a state-owned newspaper in Shanghai, said that publishing the full name of a student is not only “inappropriate”, but also “may even violate the Personal Information Protection Law.”

“It is improper to graft private affairs into the public sphere for public disposal,” the report said.

Player Teslenko confirmed on Sunday that a girl he met in Shanghai posted some videos on the telegram, but later deleted them, “Once I understood the severity of this situation”, his post on X (formerly Twitter).

“Our faces are visible, but there is no clear content or anything disrespectful in these videos, and I never said it’s easy for Chinese girls to be.”

Media reports said that Teslunko and the student met in the final of the Perfect World Shanghai Major in the game competition held in December 2024.

The email sent to Dalian Polytechnic University was not immediately answered.
