Trengeliti beats Mutai in Marrakech to make first hundred – Tennis Now

Welcome to the Marcos Trungeliti Top 100.

The Argentinian defeated Corentin Moutet 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 to reach the ATP semi-finals for the first time since 2018 and is currently ranked 85th in real time. The 36-year-old also earned his fifth career top-50 win.

The man is best known for driving the 10 hours from Barcelona to Paris with his grandmother Daphne after receiving late notification that he had secured a lucky loser spot in the men’s singles draw for the 2018 French Open.

Trengeliti, who turns 37 in January, will become the oldest person to reach the top 100 for the first time in the past 50 years.

“I was a little nervous at the end and had too many thoughts in my head, and in the end I was able to control it a little bit and do what I had to do,” Trengeliti said after the win over No. 32 Mutai.

The rise in the rankings is good news for Trengeliti. He has played in nine Grand Slam main draws, but he has never played in a major without first passing qualifying.

Since his first Grand Slam appearance in 2012, he has played 87 Grand Slam qualifying matches. Since the 2022 Australian Open, he has played 26 qualifying matches but failed to break into the main draw.

“It’s unbelievable that after 7,000 years of fighting in qualifying, I can finally be there the main race week and not have to fight like an animal in qualifying,” he said. “Of course it’s a big change for me – I’ll get to Wimbledon too – but the goals are different. The work is not done yet and I want more and more.”

Trengeliti will face top seed Luciano Dadri of Italy in the semifinals.

Defending champion Muller retires, Jordan advances to semi-finals

It wasn’t the way 19-year-old Rafael Hodahl wanted to reach his first ATP semi-finals, but it was a milestone nonetheless. Jordan led Muller 6-2, 2-0 when the Frenchman had to stop the match.

Jordal is the fourth teenager to reach the semifinals in Marrakech, joining Joao Fonseca as the second player born in 2006 or later to reach the ATP semifinals.
