Trump administrator grabs salary, default on student loan debt pension

Those who default or refuse to pay their federal student loans may have wages, federal pensions and tax refunds, the White House said Tuesday.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters in a weekly briefing that the Trump administration will follow those who do not repay loans, rather than burdening taxpayers.

“The government can and will collect defaulted federal student loan debts by withholding money from borrowers, tax refunds, federal pensions and even wages,” she said.

The Department said on Monday that the department will resume collections of defaulted federal student loans for the first time since 2020. Leavitt said the student loan portfolio is nearly $1.6 trillion.

In short, the official said there are 4 million borrowers in the late-stage crime stage of payment, meaning their payments are 91 to 180 days late.

“It's unsustainable, unfair, and a huge responsibility to American taxpayers. The debt cannot be eliminated. Ultimately it is transferred to others,” she said. “So why not go to college or go to college and pay the loan responsibly, pay the student loans of other Americans? The Trump administration will never force taxpayers to pay off student loan debts that do not belong to them.”

The education department said that within a few months, there could be nearly 10 million people by default.

The Biden administration has tried to rescue millions of student loan borrowers, but has been blocked in some cases.

“U.S. taxpayers will no longer be forced to act as collateral for irresponsible student loan policies,” said Education Secretary Linda McMahon. “The Biden administration misled borrowers: the executive has no constitutional power to eliminate debts, and no loan balances have disappeared. Hundreds of billions have been transferred to taxpayers.”

The Trump administration has long said taxpayers should not pay for trillions of dollars in student debt.

“We have to be organized and restore common sense to our country,” Levitt said. “If you borrow, you have to pay it off. It's simple. President Trump will no longer kick the can.”
