Trump Justice Department cancels Biden-era marijuana research, marijuana testing

The Trump Justice Department is taking the law to cancel Biden-era law to expand marijuana research and marijuana analysis testing.
Attorney General Pam Bondi withdraws notices of 54 proposed rulemaking in a notice issued on September 8 in the Federal Register and “previously announced regulatory action.”
These include a historic bipartisan marijuana and CBD research bill that would allow testing of cannabis that comply with the Farm Act in laboratories without a certified drug executive bureau.
In a notice released Thursday in the Federal Gazette, the Justice Department said the withdrawal of the proposed rule was “part of the federal government’s abandonment of the regulatory initiative due to ongoing assessment of agency needs, priorities and objectives.”

Marijuana Moment notes that the identifiers of marijuana testing rules are the same as hearings related to the cannabis rescheduling proposal, and President Donald Trump said he will speak soon.
But these hearings have been interrupted indefinitely since Trump’s second inauguration in January.
An anonymous White House official told Marijuana Moment that Bundy’s action did not withdraw its May 2024 proposal to relax marijuana under federal law.
The new move “should not be interpreted as withdrawing the rescheduled proposal, but rather as withdrawing the analytical lab and marijuana [notice of proposed rulemaking] According to the Cannabis Moment, the official said.
Trump promised to reschedule marijuana in weeks last month.
Cannabis rules withdraw spark uncertainty
However, there is still uncertainty as to how the withdrawal of marijuana-related measures will affect the industry and related policies.
For example, it is not yet certain how the department will step back from implementing the bipartisan medical cannabis and cannabis glycol research extension law, which was passed by Congress and former President Joe Biden signed the law in 2022.
The description of the rule suggests that under the law, the Drug Enforcement Bureau plans to update regulations to simplify the application process for researchers who wish to study the drug.
Although some lawmakers are frustrated by the implementation of the law, it is unclear why the DEA has abandoned its proposal to simplify the marijuana research process.
Another source of chaos is the Justice Department’s proposal to withdraw the analytical lab and marijuana rules.
The abstract says that this will “waive the registration requirements for the analytical laboratory for chemical analysis of cannabis samples produced only under the approved USDA cannabis production program.”
