U.S. President Donald Trump said Friday that he had ordered the positioning of two nuclear submarines in areas near Russia to deal with threats from former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.
“I ordered the positioning of two nuclear submarines in the right areas just in case these stupid and inflammatory statements are more than that,” Trump said in a social media post.
“Voice is very important and often leads to unexpected consequences, and I hope this isn’t one of them.”
Trump and Medvedev, vice-chairman of the Russian Security Council, said on Tuesday that Russia had mocked “from today” 10 days from today to agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine or a hit with oil buyers by tariffs.
U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a 50-day deadline in Russia to reach a ceasefire with Ukraine or facing “very serious tariffs.” At the same time, Trump also promised new support for Ukraine, a move that was welcomed by NATO allies.
Moscow has formulated its own peace clause in Ukraine, without indicating that it will meet Trump’s deadline.
Medvedev accused Trump of participating in the “Final Pass game” on Monday and reminded him that Russia had Soviet-era nuclear strike capabilities after Trump told Medvedev to “watch his words.”
Medvedev has become one of the Kremlin’s most outspoken anti-Western Hawks since Russia sent thousands of troops into Ukraine in 2022.
