Musetti confirms Davis Cup withdrawal – Tennis Now

Italy will compete for a third straight Davis Cup title without its two singles stars.

Musetti said fatigue from playing long hours to qualify for the ATP finals in Turin – he played in Athens last Saturday and reached the final, losing to Novak Djokovic in a marathon – and that his long-term partner Veronica was pregnant and expecting the couple’s second child were the main reasons for withdrawing.
“Taking into account my physical condition and family situation, and with the consent of captain Filippo Vollandri, I have decided not to participate in the Davis Cup final in Bologna,” Musetti said. “Obviously there are a lot of regrets and disappointments about the way I played this tournament. If there was a better way, maybe I would try to play, despite family commitments.
“I know that after these months of fighting, especially the last few weeks, the physical fatigue is hard to shake off in one day.”
Wimbledon champion Sinner has led Italy to the Davis Cup title in each of the past two years.
