Tucson, Arizona-based Tucson Unified School District (TUSD) reportedly faces financial and admission struggles after statewide passed the universal school selection in 2022.

A TUSD official told Kgun that about 4,000 students were using their credentials to go to private or home school.

The trend of parents overlooking TUSD costs the school district about $20 million. Tusd’s chief financial officer Ricky Hernandez told local media that Tusd is “preparing for continued decline in enrollment.”

According to TUSD’s chief financial officer, parents’ use of school coupons has left the area’s already debilitating enrollment rates in bad situations, including affecting teacher salaries. Due to the loss of the school district, the district is unable to provide competitive wages to retain and recruit teachers.

In addition, the region has to implement budget reductions.

“If these numbers don’t exist, it will certainly affect the number of teachers we have, how to compensate them,” Hernandez told Kgun.

The president of Tucson Education Association, a local branch of the National Education Association, warned that the loss of funds could lead teachers to leave the area.

Local media reported on Tuesday that the number of enrollments increased last year. More specifically, the K-8 in the area added 20 to 50 students.

VUSD principal John Carruth attributes the growth to housing construction in the area. Carruth added that their losses to school coupons were offset by students leaving other public school districts to enroll.

After the district’s voucher, school selection advocates responded to differences in the district’s outcomes.
