Ukraine’s Security Agency says its agent kills suspicious Russian FSB assassin
Ukrainian intelligence officers killed a Russian Secret Service member on Sunday, allegedly being shot and killed a colonel in Ukraine’s SBU security department last week, SBU said.
The intelligence agency said in a statement that the operation has sought arrests from the Russian Federal Security Agency (FSB), which killed SBU Colonel Ivan Voronych on Thursday in Kiev.
“A special operation was performed this morning, during which members of the Russian FSB agent cells began to resist and were therefore liquidated.”
Russian authorities did not immediately publicly comment on Sunday’s action, reflecting the assassination of senior Russian military officials by Ukraine during the three-year war, a source of embarrassment from Moscow’s vast intelligence agency.
SBU said two people – a man and a woman – were suspected of killing Voronych. It did not say how many allegedly suspected FSB agents were killed on Sunday.
Ukrainian drones penetrated deep into Russia’s enemy territory, and officials claimed the attack destroyed more than 40 Russian fighter jets. According to SBU, the alleged assassin was informed by its handlers of their target and tracking his movements. SBU said they ended up getting coordinates of a hiding place and they found a pistol with a suppressor.
It said they tried to “reduce” after being killed on Thursday, but were tracked by SBU and police.
The agency’s terms of reference cover security and counterintelligence, but since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, it has also played a major role in special operations against Moscow, including assassinations and sabotage attacks.
