Unfounded post about Indian embassy attacks abuse of old photos

No basis Indian social media users spread rumors that the country’s embassy in Afghanistan was attacked in early July. The visuals in the fake post are ancient and include a photo of a bombing that damaged the German embassy building in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan in 2017.

“Shocking news from Kabul: Attack on the Indian Embassy; several officials are marred when serving the country,” Hindi X Post shared the 7 July 2025 Hindi X Post.

“This shameful act violates international diplomacy principles,” the title depicts a damaged building with two images.

Similar claims surfaced on the anniversary of the 2008 attack on the Indian embassy in Afghanistan 41 people were injured, about 150 people (reserved here, here).

Comments on fake posts suggest that social media users believe the visuals are up to date.

One person wrote, “This is bad news.” Another said, “What will Modi do?” refers to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

However, there are no official reports on the attacks against Indian diplomatic headquarters in Kabul.

On Google, the combination of reverse image and keyword search found the first photo in the archives of the Associated Press (AP) News Agency (Archive Link)

“Afghan security forces burned the houses at the scene of a clash between insurgents and security forces at the Indian Consulate in Herat, Afghanistan on Friday, May 23, 2014,” part of its title.
