Video of the man who fled the tsunami was not taken after the 2025 Russian earthquake

A video truly shows people on the coastline who fled the tsunami after an earthquake on the Russian coast in July 2025.

In late July 2025, the earthquake triggered a tsunami warning throughout the Pacific region after a magnitude 8.8 earthquake (archived) occurred in Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, which spread on social media and allegedly showed people fleeing the tsunami wave caused by the earthquake.
For example, an X user shared a video, which has been viewed over 460,000 times as of this writing, titled (archive): “Crack: The 8.7-magnitude earthquake struck Russia, which triggered the tsunami, as seen in this video.”

The clip appears along with the claims of X elsewhere and comes with titles related to the Russian earthquake (archive, save).
However, the video was misled. The clip actually describes the consequences of another tsunami in Greenland in 2017, rather than in Russia in 2025.
The earliest version of the first discovered Snake Screw was released on YouTube on September 8, 2017 (archived) with the title “Nuugaatsiaq Tsunami rasmus”. It is not clear who recorded the video posted on YouTube; however, it seems to be real and nothing can indicate that it was created using artificial intelligence software.

In 2021, LICET Studios, a video licensing company, provides television, film and digital publishers with rights to clear videos, listing videos on its licensing platform (archive) and YouTube (archive).
The video is titled “Greenland Tsunami: Fishermen Run for Their Life – Camera 3”, and the description on the licensing platform is read:
When one of the highest tsunamis recorded in history and destroyed the village of Nuugaatsiaq (Greenland) in the evening, four deaths were caused, the shocking video captured the impact. The subsequent tsunami surprised residents to try to secure their property.
YouTube subtitles added: “Luckily these three [people in the video] Able to escape the waves in time. ”
The platform said the footage was released on September 8, 2017, which matches the date of the above YouTube clip. LICET’s credit Rasmus J. also matches the name in the YouTube video title.
