Virginia medical marijuana sales have far exceeded expectations

Since seed-to-sale tracking two months ago, Virginia cannabis regulators have reported nearly $30 million in medical cannabis sales, much higher than forecasts.

According to the Virginia Marijuana Control Administration, marijuana patients made 256,432 transactions and $2.994 million in sales in July and August.

This is much higher than the prediction.

According to Mjbizdaily Factbook estimates, total sales in 2025 are expected to be $59 million.

According to Factbook, there are about 103,900 registered marijuana patients in Virginia.

According to reports, the state’s tillers also reportedly collected 17,786 plants, and the data showed Vikings’ seeds to sales tracking provider METRC.

Committee Chairman Paul Krizek said the bipartisan legislator committee was working to develop another set of proposed regulations.

Krizek said the committee is considering a statewide license cap.

These include:

  • 350 marijuana is stored statewide.
  • Culture limits are performed by plant count rather than canopy space.
  • Municipalities are allowed to ban stores.

Partisan marijuana politics in Virginia dominated by multiple operators

According to Krizek, if voters elect Democratic gubernatorial candidate Abigail Spanberger in November, Virginia’s adult-use cannabis market is likely to launch in 2026.

By contrast, Republican candidate Gov. Winsome Earle-sears claims adult marijuana use “will destroy us” and boasts that she fired an employee once she “found herself on marijuana.”

Recent veto legislation will give the state exclusive adult sales rights to its existing medical cannabis business, which are major multi-state operators:
