Waymo expands service areas near San Francisco and Los Angeles

according to TechCrunch. The company brings its robots to several new cities and communities around Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Starting today, riders along the San Francisco Peninsula will be able to try a Waymo driverless taxi in the cities of Brisbane, South San Francisco, San Bruno, Millbray and Burlinger. The same is true for Silicon Valley locations such as Palo Alto and Menlo Park.

The Greater Los Angeles area will be expanded on June 18. Robots will be available in communities such as Echo Park, Silver Lake, Ladera Heights and Playa del Rey. They will also run through the entire Sunset Boulevard.

The company said the recent expansion will add about 80 square miles to the operating boundaries of both regions. With other expansions across the state, this will bring California’s total coverage to 250 square miles.

Waymo recently boasted that it reached a 10 million row milestone with 250,000 weekly rides in every four U.S. markets. The Waymo One service is also running in Phoenix and Austin. This is a good indicator considering the company abandoned its waitlist and began offering rides to the public last year.

The company plans to test its driverless system this year in 10 new cities including Las Vegas and San Diego. It also announced that it will start offering driverless taxis in Washington, D.C. in 2026. Waymo has not given up on the rest of the world. It began testing robots in Tokyo earlier this year.

The company also plans to double its fleet. Waymo currently operates 1,500 Jaguar I-Pace SUVs. There will be a fleet of 2,000 around next year.
