Minnesota finally launches cannabis sales for adults

Non-tribal adult marijuana sales are finally launching this week in Minnesota.
Minnesota opens a recreational marijuana market for the second time in 2025, and is now the 23rd state in the United States, with legal retail for adult marijuana.
OCM director Eric Taubel told Star Tribune.
Sales of cannabis for adult use began earlier this summer at retail locations operated by Native American tribes.
But on Monday, the State Office of Marijuana Management (OCM) authorized two licensed medical marijuana providers in the state to start selling to adults aged 21 and older, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune.
They are:
- Rise is a retail chain owned by the cannabis multi-orch operator Green Thumb Industry.
- Green commodity operated by Vireo Growth.
Green merchandise began selling to entertainment customers at eight of its locations on Tuesday.
According to the Star Tribune, today comes with the total number of active retailers “more than a dozen”.
Minnesota launches $430 million in potential market
Recreational marijuana sales in Minnesota are expected to reach $430 million in 2026, according to MJBIZ Factbook.
Delaware legalized adult marijuana use in 2023 and opened this year.
Minnesota’s recreational marijuana use was legalized in 2023, but the state issued licensing slowly, with regulators granting the first farming license in late June.
It can take 90 days for the cannabis crop to be sold, so many licensed stores still don’t have cannabis products to put on the shelves.
It is unclear when other new entrants in the Minnesota cannabis market will be able to sell their products.
But at the same time, both existing MMJ companies can sell their cannabis products to other retailers.
“One of the key features of medical portfolio licenses is that they can wholesale medical and adult marijuana to state licensees,” Tauber told the newspaper.
