Rod Laver ranked No. 1
Four-time Grand Slam champion Aryna Sabalenka’s first-round match against Chinese qualifier Bai Zhuoxuan kicked off the top seed’s time at center stage at Rod Laver Arena. Next up, six-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz will face Germany’s Yannick Hanfmann.
Jovic in the spotlight
What a great opportunity for 18-year-old Eva Jovic. The Torrance, California native will get her first chance to compete on Rod Laver Arena when she takes on Australia’s Priscilla Hon in the second match of the night’s event.
Jovic, ranked 27th, has a record of 8 wins and 2 losses this season. The semi-finals were held in Auckland and the final was held in Hobart. She defeated Katie Wolinec 6-2 6-3 in the first round and won the Australian Open main draw title for the second time.
Medvedev heats up
He is a three-time Australian Open finalist and looks to be a serious contender once again. Daniil Medvedev has put a difficult 2025 behind him and won two titles in three months to look to move back into the top five. The former world number one will face France’s Quentin Harris at John Cain Arena.
If you look further at the draw, Medvedev’s draw was very good. A potential fourth-round showdown with Learner Tian lurks, and if he finds himself in the quarter-finals and his seed remains unchanged, he’ll face Alexander Zverev for a semi-final spot.
Teenagers rising
In addition to Jovic, two other teenagers will also be favored in the third round: eighth seed Mirra Andreeva (18) will face Maria Sakkari in the third match at Margaret Court Arena, while 17th seed Victoria Mboko (19) will face Maria Sakkari at 1573 Arena Arena) against American player Caty McNally (second game).
Tereza Valentova, 18, will play Linda Fruhvirtova in her second round match on day five, meaning four teenagers could potentially advance to the third round in Melbourne. (Nineteen-year-old Nikola Bartunkova will face Daria Kasatkina in the first round on day three, while three other teenagers – Emerson Jones, Maya Joint and Sara Bejlek – have already been eliminated.
Jovic and Mboko are good friends and actually play doubles together in Melbourne. They completed the first round on the third day.
