Carlos Alcaraz is firmly in control of the battle for the year-end No. 1 ATP title awarded by PIF Honors. Can Jannik Sinner make a comeback at the end of the season and steal the honors from his arch-rival?

If Sinner dreams of doing so, he’ll have to start with a deep run at this week’s FirstBank Open in Vienna.

The Italian is participating in the Austrian ATP 500 event and can therefore add 500 points to his PIF ATP Live Race To Turin total this week. If he wins, he will receive 500 points from Alcaraz (who did not compete).

This is important because Sinner has no room for error. The 24-year-old currently trails Alcaraz by 2,540 points in live competition, a barometer of the year-end battle for first place.

After this week, the two stars will compete in the Rolex Paris Masters (up to 1,000 points) and the Nitto ATP Finals (up to 1,500 points). That means Sinner needs to win every point for the rest of the season and hope that Alcaraz (67-7 in 2025, according to the Infosys ATP Win-Loss Index) doesn’t sustain his performance.

If Sinner lifts the Vienna trophy for a second time, he will be 2,040 points behind the Spaniard heading into live action in Paris, where he can further close the gap. Alcaraz still has a very healthy edge, but a small amount of pressure will start to mount.

If Sinner fails to win a match in Vienna, he will be 2,540 points behind heading into the final ATP Masters 1000 event of the season. By then, even with victories in Paris and Turin, Sinner would only have 11,000 points, while Alcaraz currently has 11,040 points. During the week between Paris and Turin, Italians do not enter Athens or Metz.

Both men are chasing a second ATP year-end No. 1 ranking from the PIF, a feat achieved by Alcaraz in 2022 and Sinner last year.
