Will Rogers’ great-granddaughter tells the truth behind Hollywood career, Cowboy Dream

At the time of his death, 30s star Will Rogers was the highest-paid actor in Hollywood, but according to his great-granddaughter Jennifer Rogers-etcheverry, all he really wanted was to be a cowboy.
“I think the Hollywood scene paid the bill,” Rogers-Geterry lives in Oklahoma, Oklahoma, where he was called “Oklahoma’s favorite son.”
“And he signed with Fox to make a few movies, and he didn’t finish the contract, but he would pick them out so he could go on a trip, go on a ranch, go on polo, go on something.”
Rogers owns 186-acre ranch in Pacific Palisades, California, which was destroyed in January in Los Angeles fires.

“I don’t think his passion is a movie star,” Rogers Avery said. “His passion is with the people.”
Rogers, the most paid actor, made more than 70 movies when he died in a 55-year-old plane crash in 1935. But he is also a writer and newspaper columnist, with more than 40 million readers a day, and he writes six books.
“I don’t know when that man will sleep.” “But he just wants to see everything. He wants to go and get the movie to pay.”

Despite being friendly with celebrities like Clark Gable and Walt Disney, Rogers-Getterry said he was “average guy.”
“And he never forgets where he came from Oklahoma,” she said. “He never forgot to be a cowboy. That’s the cowboy he wanted to be. I think he just sticks to his roots. From just a cowboy on a ranch in Oogologah in Oklahoma to a cowboy in Oklahoma to a box office number one in Hollywood…he never had that attitude or that arrogant attitude.”

She said her grandfather always told her that when Rogers returned to the ranch, “He was dad, he was not Will Rogers.
Rogers was picky in a wild western show in Texas, engaged in the entertainment business before being hired as Ziegfeld Follies of New York.
“As he said, he entertains the audience through trick-and-treat, while the girls go from nothing to nothing, and he is told not to say a word. ” she said.

She once said when he messed up a trick he was joking: “Hello everyone, sorry, I went all out, but the audience laughed and he immediately excited the laughter.”
“At that time he knew he could entertain people,” Rogers-etcheverry said.

She said that shortly afterward, he took on the role of speaking, citing what he read in the newspaper, making fun of the U.S. president until celebrities started attending his show, which was always sold out.
“It’s just driving through there,” Rogers Avery said. “Then he ended up signing the movie and moved to California.”

“Of course, the press is everywhere,” Rogers-etcheverry explained. “So, he kind of put them in and left them there. They do stay there. I don’t know how long they’ve been there, but when all the things that happen, they do spend a lot of time there.”

Rogers died in an Alaska plane crash while measuring mail routes with Oklahoma pilot Wiley Post in August 1935, “not only shut down the United States, but also the world.”
“When he died, he was not only the most famous person in the United States, he was indeed the most famous person in the world. Everyone knew who he was, and he visited every country. He was an informal humanitarian in the United States.”

When she was involved in the family business to maintain Rogers’ memory, Rogers Avery said older people told her they remember being a child when Rogers died.
“They said to me, ‘That’s the only time I’ve ever seen my dad cry or my mom cry. They were destroyed, and I think it’s because he’s a person who makes you feel good.

Rogers-Edgefry said that Rogers’s legacy, Betty donated his ranch and land to the state in 1944 and became Will Rogers State Historical Park, which still attracts celebrities today.
She said she took over Rogers’ family representative a few years ago.

“I want to keep his legacy alive. I have two children and two grandchildren, and if it weren’t for me, they wouldn’t know who Rogers was.”
“You know, in Oklahoma, it’s a little easier. He’s Oklahoma’s favorite son, and there’s nothing named for him here. But you’re out of the state, and it’s even more challenging.”
