Wilmington Industrial Tunnel collapses; trapped workers are rescued

As many as 15 workers may be trapped underground after reports of an industrial tunnel crash in Wilmington.

Workers were hung in a tunnel as of 9 p.m. Wednesday and did not appear to be injured, according to local TV news footage. It is not clear how long the rescue operation will last.

The tunnel was built as part of a sanitation project.

More than 100 Los Angeles Fire Department personnel have been assigned to the incident, located at 1701 N. Figueroa St., the only entry point for the tunnel. This includes specially trained and equipped search and rescue teams to handle narrow space tunnel rescue.

According to the LAFD, there are concerns that workers may be trapped six miles south of the access point.

Television news footage showed first responders gathered around a wide shaft at the scene of the incident, while metal cages lifted workers and they calmly exited.

This is a breakthrough story that will be updated.
