Huang Kewen defeated Mariano Navone 6-3, 7-5 at the Bank of China Hong Kong Tennis Open on Tuesday, becoming the first player to win the tournament on behalf of Hong Kong in the history of the event.
The 21-year-old has failed on two previous occasions at the ATP 250 event but promises it will be third time lucky. The wild-card player, who reached the third round at the U.S. Open in August, will next play Canadian Gabriel Diallo, who defeated Jesper De Jong 6-4, 7-6(7).
Defending champion Alexander Muller continued his impressive record by defeating Miomir Kekmanović 7-5, 6-4 in Hong Kong. The Frenchman won his first ATP Tour title at the 2025 event and will face Marcos Giron in the second round. Team USA easily defeated Laszlo Djer 6-2, 6-0.
Fifth seed Lorenzo Sonego and Argentine Thomas Martin Echeverri also advanced. Sonego beat #NextGenATP Japanese star Rei Sakamoto 6-2, 7-6(4), while Etcheverry beat Valentin Royer 6-4 7-5. Echeverri will next face top seed and PIF ATP No. 7 Lorenzo Musetti.
