Evacuation ordered in the portal area due to wildfire

Mesa County, Colo. (KREX) – At 4:30 p.m. Saturday, the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office ordered all private land and mile markers between 120 and 124 on Highway 141 near Gatway.

An evacuation center is located on the Clifton Community Campus on 3270 D 1/2 Road, Clifton.

The Mesa County Department of Natural Resources has set up aid telephone lines for those in need to protect their large animals. Residents can contact this line by calling 970-778-0162.

The evacuation notice was due to fires in the area that began Thursday in Turner Canyon and Wright. Other fires burning Saturday included the South Edge fire in the Black Canyon of Gunnison National Park, Sowbelly Fire and Deer Creek Fire in the Dominguez Canyon Wilderness area near Saar, Old Los Angeles, Utah.

Residents can register emergency alerts on the Grand Junction’s Regional Communications Center website.

Earlier Saturday afternoon, Route 141, near the Gateway area, received a evacuation notice from the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office.
