Zohran Mamdani’s Shocking New York City Mayor Primary Shocks Trump, Joyful “Desis”

The initial underdog movement has now become one of the biggest political plots of the year. Zohran Mamdani, a 33-year-old democratist and New York State Councilor, won the democratic nomination for New York City mayor, defended Andrew Cuomo, a political heavyweight, and ignited a fierce danger that has touched the truth of U.S. President Donald Trump’s social tirade.
Mamdani announced his victory Tuesday night from a rooftop bar in Queens, with 90% of the vote counting at 43.5% and 43.5%. Cuomo, 67, admitted the game, praising Mamdani for a “very smart and great campaign” even as the final result awaits the ranking selections scheduled for July 1.
Mamdani, born in Uganda, immigrated to New York at the age of 7 and eventually obtained U.S. citizenship in 2018. He used to be a rapper, and he used several alias, including Young Cardamom, and during the campaign he embraced his roots and creativity.

But initially at the grassroots level, the left-wing movement quickly rolled in and fell into controversy at the national level.
“100% Communist madman”: Trump lashes at Mamdani
Hours after Mamdani announced X’s victory, Donald Trump called Mamdani “a 100% communist madman” and criticized his appearance, voice and political supporters. “This has finally happened. Democrats have crossed the line,” Trump wrote.
He added in the post: “We’ve had radical left-handed before, but it’s becoming ridiculous…even Cryin’Chuck Schumer is frustrated with him!”
Trump’s dramatic reaction highlights that Mamdani’s rise is not only a local story—it becomes a national flash point, revealing profound differences on the future of American progressive politics.

Desis Celebration: From Political Victory to Parental Pressure Memes
As Trump launched the attack, netizens from India and South Asia celebrated the moment with memes, jokes and pride. Social media is full of humor and cultural references, and few users even voiced Mamdani as “The SRK of New York Politics” and praised his jogging policy video.
One user quipped: “Zohran Mamdani is here to run for the 33-year-old mayor of New York City, you are still unemployed in Gurgaon? kya zamana hai!” Another joked: “Look at Mira Nair’s son, 33-year-old mayor, you are still “finding yourself” in Brooklyn.”
A fun fan group even emerged under the name “Zoran’s Hot Boy” claiming their love for “the atmosphere, free bus rides and that sleepy smile.” His Bollywood-inspired campaign style and Tiktok-friendly message turned political rally into a pop culture moment.
What’s next?
If he wins the election in November this year, Mamdani will honor New York’s first Indian American mayor and youngest. His campaign played a role in huge progress issues such as rent freezes and free passenger buses, carving a niche for himself in a young, working-class immigrant community.
Republicans warn that his left-wing platform is “dangerous”, but his support base believes that the culture and generational changes in leadership should have been long overdue.
