“Mr. Brian is facing allegations of violence and nonviolence and we are coordinating closely with law enforcement agencies to ensure he quickly resumes detention. Most importantly, victims in these incidents have been notified. We are implementing safeguards to prevent this from happening again.

According to the Orleans Diocese District Attorney’s Office and OPSO, Brian was detained for illegal possession of stolen property, possession of drug paraphernalia and boycotting officials. He also obtained an active arrest warrant from the H Criminal District Court to aggravate the attacks through guns, domestic abuse, danger of endangering children and family invasions.

Bryan was also wanted in nearby Jefferson Parish and was awarded a $100,000 bench warrant for failing to appear in court and a separate $25,000 bond in connection with recent felony charges.

After the error was released, Orleans Parish District Attorney Jason Williams made a sharp wording.

“We have realized that prisoner Khalil Bryan was wrongly released by the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office for serious mistakes in prisoner processing,” Williams said.

“despite this [bond] Holds, Bryan released a mistake in response to a bond issued by an unrelated person to another prisoner, failed to properly verify his identity and falsely released Bryan. ”

“This is a disturbing incident, highlighting the ongoing systemic issues surrounding the exercise of custody and control of an individual detained. Failure to properly identify the prisoner before release is an unacceptable mistake, which presents a real direct risk to public safety.”

“Populars of OPDA victims have begun victim outreach and will continue to work until all victims and witnesses related to Bryan’s prosecution. Where we cannot contact, we send investigators to ensure that affected victims and their families are notified and appropriate support is obtained.

“The public deserves a judicial system that operates with integrity, professionalism and vigilance, especially when protecting victims.”

Hutson confirmed that all known victims had been notified. The District Attorney’s Office said investigators are actively working to reach out to anyone who may not be in contact, including through face-to-face visits when needed.

The release came in 10 weeks after escaping from the same prison from May 16, when 10 prisoners escaped from the Orleans Parish Prison.
