Two-time Rolex Shanghai Masters champion Roger Federer returns to the China Center Court on Friday for an exhibition match, teaming up with actor Donnie Yen to play actor Wu Lei and former WTA star Zheng Jie.

After three tie-breaks, Federer and Donnie Yen came back to win 5-7, 10-8, 7-1.

While the Chinese actors admitted to feeling nervous before the match, Federer praised their efforts: “It shows you care,” he said of their pre-match jitters. “I think you did a really good job. Thanks for coming. I can tell you had a great time.”

The Swiss also praised Yan and Wu for their hard work in preparing for the game: “I want to say it’s for Downey and Ray, training hard to prepare for the game. [Jie and I] Not having to practice like them, but just to see the passion behind it, I hope they keep that passion after the game as well. ” he said. “Maybe also people watching the games and people in the stadiums, just to show how important sport is to everyday life and happiness. Federer also played an exhibition match in Shanghai last year, partnering with Chinese singer and actor Eason Chan against ATP Tour player Zhang Zhizhen and table tennis champion Fan Zhendong.

Federer, the former PIF ATP No. 1, has a 23-6 record in Shanghai, according to the Infosys ATP Win-Loss Index. The Swiss won the title in 2014 and 2017. He also reached the final on his debut in 2010 and made his eighth and final appearance in 2019.
