Grigor Dimitrov’s return to action at the Rolex Paris Masters this week was sweet, but sadly it was cut short when he withdrew from his second-round match against Daniil Medvedev on Wednesday afternoon.
The 34-year-old Bulgarian missed three months with a pectoral injury but made a triumphant return against Giovanni Mpetsi Perikad on Monday. However, before his 12th Lexus ATP head-to-head match with Medvedev (8-3 Medvedev), Dimitrov withdrew due to a shoulder injury.
In the fourth round of Wimbledon in July, Dimitrov was two sets ahead of then world number one Janik Sinner when he suddenly felt pain in his chest muscles and was forced to withdraw. This marked his fifth consecutive major withdrawal before retiring.
A former PIF ATP No. 3 player, Dimitrov took three months off before making his long-awaited return to Paris, where he reached the 2023 final. He accompanied Nicolas Mahut in the doubles on Tuesday night in the final game of the Frenchman’s career.

However, Dimitrov failed to return to singles action on Wednesday. Instead, the match between Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Arthur Cazaux has been upgraded from Court 2 to Court 1.

Medvedev reaches the third round in Paris for the first time since reaching the final in 2021 and will next face either Lorenzo Musetti or Lorenzo Sonego.
