Google Demos Android XR glasses in I/O with live language translation

Google digs into the past and introduces the latest smart glasses during I/O 2025. Wearing Android XR glasses brings Gemini AI to smart glasses, thanks to the expanded partnership between Google and Samsung. These smart glasses can be synced with the smartphone to access the app and are equipped with speakers and an optional lens display for private viewing of information.

For those who remember the old Google glass frames that are not too strange, this iteration seems to focus more on real-world wear resistance and style. Google also works with the gentle monster and Warby Parker as an inaugural partner that provides the framework.

Highlights of glasses’ I/O demonstration attempts to perform live translation. Shahram Izadi and Nishtha Bhatia speak Farsi and Hindi in the XR framework for real-time translation into English. The demo was a victim of the AI curse who performed poorly in the live show, but in a brief moment each of their glasses worked successfully the way they hoped.

In addition to the demo, Bhatia showed how the Gemini Assistant worked with XR Glasses, asked questions about the images she saw in the backstage of the theater, and summoned information about the cafe drinking coffee before the show.
